Silent Smile
Just a simple boy with a simple plan
You'd give me a box of toys and I'd occupy myself
I never thought the right thoughts, I never read the right words
I never realized ridicule hurt so much

You were my best friend and you were my enemy too
The life I've left behind can stay right where it is
I will not bow to those who cross me anymore
I do not follow those who taught me anymore
I have a reason to wake another day
'Cause your silent smile shows me a simpler way

Growing up strong in a real small town
Mean words travel fast when you're not wearing cool clothes
Looking up, looking down, looking over my shoulder
How can I learn to love when I was taught to hate?

You were my best friend and you were my enemy too
The life I've left behind can stay right where it is
I will not bow to those who cross me anymore
I do not follow those who taught me anymore
I have a reason to wake another day
'Cause your silent smile shows me a simpler way

I will not bow to those who cross me anymore
I do not follow those who taught me anymore
I have a reason to wake another day
'Cause your silent smile shows me a simpler way

- This song is written about how cruel kids can
be when they bully each other around for what
seems to be no particular reason.  When I was
growing up, I was thrown in a creek because I
wasn't wearing the "right clothes".  Out of that
bad childhood experience came an interesting
lyrical concept.
